I’ve had a lot on my mind lately. Between losing Molly, struggling with my finances, having real talk with friends (and embarrassingly crying in public), questioning my life choices and dealing with some personal issues, my brain has been on a constant cycle of confusion, heartbreak, hurt, sadness and then some happy feelings in between.
If you’ve been paying attention to my Spotify music choices, you may have noticed that I’ve been listening to more solemn music. My “pity party” playlist has sadly been utilized a lot during the past couple of weeks, and songs like “When It Rains” by Paramore, “Perfect” by Hedley and “Save My Soul” by JoJo have been on repeat.
I think anytime some kind of change happens in my life, I automatically revert to feeling lost and wanting to make life changes. Whether it be having a bad day at work, saying good-bye to a friend, being rejected by a crush or most recently my dog dying, I’m always quick to reanalyze how I’m living my life and make plans to make major changes ASAP. While I won’t go into those details on here yet, I do want to say that the few family and friends I have spoken to about these things have been so gracious, not only for supporting my decisions but also pushing me and reminding me that I’m worth more than accepting and settling for things and people that take me for granted.
I’ve been reading a lot more, which makes me so happy because I forgot how incredible it felt to get lost in a really good book. Music has also been getting me through it. I’m slowly making the transition to listening to my “inspired” playlist, which includes some perfect songs to listen during this time while I’m feeling lost and second-guessing myself a lot.
ROAD BETWEEN by LUCY HALE
When this song comes on, I can’t help but belt out all of the lyrics. I just love the message of this song. She basically sings about how she doesn’t have many things figured out, and she’s continuing to make mistakes, but it’s okay because she’s also learning and growing as a person. Until she gets to the endpoint, she’s going to continue making mistakes, and she’s going to borrow the knowledge and wisdom of others along the way, and this will allow her to be better later on, but for now, she’s just struggling on the road in between, and that’s okay. I resonate with these lyrics so much, which is why I’m super in love with the song. Plus, I just think Lucy has a really pretty voice.
Favorite lyrics: “I’m still getting to the good part, the breaking down, learning how to write my story. And I’m in the middle of the madness, the live and lose, finding who I’m gonna be.”
FLY – MADDIE & TAE
I’ve only just recently fallen in love with Maddie & Tae, and this is probably one of my favorite songs by them because I always feel so inspired after listening to it. The girls sing about how even though you may have fallen (whether physically or emotionally) and you have may have gotten the short end of the stick, even though the world has beaten you up, you can still turn this whole thing around, rise above it and come out on top in the end.
Favorite lyrics: “You’ve come this far. Don’t you be scared now, cause you can learn to fly on the way down.”
BEGIN AGAIN – TAYLOR SWIFT
Even though this song clearly walks you through a person being able to get over an ex and move on to another relationship, I think it reflects more than that. I like to think of it as a representation of new beginnings in general. You basically have all of these expectations for what your future is going to be because you’re basing it all on your past experiences. When you’re able to move past those experiences and open yourself to new ones, you realize that your future isn’t your past, and you can work toward properly moving on, whether that be pertaining to a relationship, job, friendship or just life’s expectations in general.
Favorite lyrics: “And for the first time, what’s past is past.”
YOU’RE WORTH IT – CIMORELLI
Every single lyric in this song resonates with me. Anytime I’m feeling down, I get rejected, I’m doubting myself, etc. I like to listen to this song because it’s such a great reminder. It speaks about being unapologetic about who you are and reminding yourself that you’re worth more than you give yourself credit for. It’s such a wonderful message.
Favorite lyrics (except I actually love all of them): “You’re not your pain, not your past. Your scars will never hold you back. There’s so much that you’ve been through that nobody knows, so many things you never show.”
UNWRITTEN – NATASHA BEDINGFIELD
An oldie but goodie. This song always inspires me because it serves as an incredible reminder that the rest of your life is a black slate, and you get to decide how you want the rest of your story to be written.
Favorite lyrics: “We’ve been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can’t live that way.”
