Weirdly, speed dating is something that I’ve always wanted to do. I don’t really know why it’s been on my bucket list for years or when it was added, but this past weekend, I finally had the chance to check it off. I think a lot of people have apprehension when it comes to any kind of unconventional dating styles, and speed dating is not something that many people participate in down south.
I had a few friends that had gone speed dating in Dallas, and after they had a fun experience with it, many of us wanted to travel to Texas to do it too. When we couldn’t find a date that worked with all of our schedules, we decided to host our own speed dating event. We put everything together in less than a month and ended up getting more participants than the one that they went to in Dallas with sixteen girls and thirteen guys. We also got a bit of media coverage during the planning stage, which you can view by clicking here.
The theme for the night was “Singles Seis de Mayo” because it was held on May 6th. With that theme in mind, all participates received a margarita and a Mexican hors d’oeuvres, including a nacho bar and mini taquitos, with the price of their ticket.
I went into it with certain expectations, and those expectations went out the window after my first date. I actually really enjoyed most of my dates. Some of the participants were friends of mine, and for those dates it was fun getting to learn a little bit more about them. Most of the time, I hang out with people in big groups, so being able to have one-on-one time with people that I know on a less personal level was a lot of fun.
We also had a photobooth because it’s nearly impossible for me to host an event without one.

After the event, we had an unofficial after party at a local club called Rockin’ Rodeo. It was neat to let loose after going on thirteen five-minute dates. We sang karaoke, danced to some line dances and enjoyed free admission because we all came from speed dating.
If you’ve ever had any apprehension about speed dating, you should definitely be open-minded! The experience was so different than I thought it would be, and it’s something I think all singles should give a try.
