When I started getting in the Christmas spirit last month, I decided that I wanted to have a “grown-up” Christmas tree with a theme. I looked on Pinterest for a little bit for inspiration before it hit me – I want to decorate a Harry Potter Christmas Tree! Clearly, I’ll never be a proper grown-up because I got way too excited about this idea, and I was even more excited when my little dream came to life.
Sadly, I’m not as crafty as I wish I was, and my attempts at making a howler and a snitch ornament were unbelievably horrible, but I still managed to DIY a few of the ornaments and find a couple gems. I only used the red and gold ornaments in my ornament collection, and the rest I either made or bought.
DIY Glitter Ornament and DIY Wands
For the gold glitter ornament, I went to Wal-Mart and bought some clear plastic ornaments for $1 each. I poured a bit of hairspray into the ornament and swished it around to make sure every surface was covered then I poured out the excess. Next, I poured gold glitter into the ornament and shook it around until the entire inside of it was covered in gold. I used black acrylic craft paint to paint a lightning bolt on the front.
To make the wands, I followed a few different Pinterest tutorials. I sharpened a few pencils until they were the length I wanted and then used hot glue to make different designs on the pencils. Most tutorials called for marbles on top, but I didn’t want to buy any, so I got some old Mardi Gras beads and cut them up to glue at the top. Lastly, I spray painted a few coats of espresso-colored spray paint to make it look like a wand. You can see a better picture of one of the wands below with the gold stag ornament.
Hedwig Ornaments
I found these white and gold owl ornaments on sale at Michael’s and fell in love. They’re so cute! They came three to a pack and look perfect on the tree.
DIY Quidditch Broomstick Ornament
For the Quidditch broomstick ornaments, I followed this tutorial. These were pretty frustrating to make, but I love how they turned out. I ended up only making three, and it took me about six episodes of That 70’s Show to finish.
Red and Gold Stag Ornaments
I found these ornaments at Big Lots, and I was so excited when I saw they were available in both red and gold. They are perfect to represent Harry’s patronus, and I love how much they stand out on the tree.
Harry Potter Ornament
This ornament was given to me as a gift from Jon’s family last Christmas. I was so excited to get it, but I didn’t get to put it on my tree until this year. Obviously, it’s front and center on my tree.
Darth Vader Ornament
Okay, obviously this isn’t a Harry Potter ornament, but I had to put it on the tree. Admittedly, I’ve only seen one Star Wars movie back in middle school, and I fell asleep, so why is it on the tree? This precious ornament was a gift from my friend, Alyssa, and I adore her so much that of course I had to include it. She is a huge fan of Star Wars, and it makes me happy every time I look at it. Plus, it’s pretty dang cute.
Have you put up your Christmas tree yet? What’s your favorite ornament?
