As an ESFJ, I love going out and being around people as much as humanly possible, but admittedly, it can get exhausting. While I prefer to get dressed up and leave the house on most days, sometimes it feels amazing to just stay at home, be lazy, and leave the bra off (ya know what I mean, ladies?).
The same goes when it comes to date night. Even though Kyle and I have known each other for over two years, we’ve only been dating for ten months. When we do go out for a date, I still like to get all dressed up, put my face on and see his reaction when I put a little more effort into my appearance. As fun as those nights are, some of my favorite memories we’ve made since we’ve been dating include laughing on the couch together about something silly, cuddling up and bingeing a TV show together and just talking and getting to know each other better. Date nights don’t have to be a huge debacle every time. You can have just as much fun together at home.
WINE & CHEESE NIGHT
If you’ve been following my travels to Philly and Vegas, you know I’m always on the hunt for a good cheese plate. Instead of going out to find the best cheese plate in your town, why not make a cheese plate at home? All you need are a variety of cheeses and some crackers. You could even get some fruits, like green apples and grapes, some nuts (Kyle and I are big fans of candied pralines) and a some pepper jellies, jams or honey.
Of course you have to pair your cheese with a good bottle of wine. Our new favorites are the Red Blend and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Gentleman’s Collection. Not only are they delicious, but the wines are actually a taste and an experience all rolled into one. You can download the Living Wine Labels app and hold it up to the bottle to make it come to life. The Gentleman’s Collection features Dr. Lindeman, an Australian winemaking pioneer. We had so much fun listening to Dr. Lindeman while sipping our wine and eating our cheese.
You can download the Living Wine Labels app in the Google Play Store and in the Apple Store to see what other wines you can bring to life. If you want to hear the story behind Dr. Lindeman, you can purchase the Gentleman’s Collection at your local Kroger, Ralph’s or Fred Meyer.
HAVE A GAME NIGHT
Who doesn’t love a good game night? There are so many options for two-player games, such as Skip-Bo, Phase 10, Risk or Monopoly.
HAVE A MOVIE MARATHON
It’s hard to argue with a lazy night on the couch in your PJ’s surrounded by snacks. Pick a theme, a series or a just a few random movies to have a movie marathon. My go-to is always Harry Potter.
If you and your S/O are both fans of sushi, this would be such a fun date night in. Search Pinterest for some good sushi combos, grab your favorite ingredients from the grocery store and get to rollin’!
KARAOKE NIGHT FOR 2
Did you know there are tons of karaoke versions of songs on YouTube? With lyrics? For my 28th birthday, I bought two Bluetooth mics and projected lyrics from YouTube videos onto the wall for some DIY karaoke at home. You can do the same thing with your S/O. Sing your favorites, do a few duets, go to town!
Buy some snacks or prepare a few picnic foods then grab a blanket and have a picnic in the backyard. Crappy weather? Have an indoor picnic right in your living room.
STARGAZING WITH HOT COCOA
I love going outside and looking up at the stars, especially on a clear night. Make some hot cocoa (with lots and lots of marshmallows, of course), grab a blanket and do some stargazing in the backyard.
HAVE BREAKFAST IN BED
Make breakfast together then get your cuddle on in bed while you eat it all or surprise your S/O by making the breakfast yourself and serving it to them before they wake up. Either way, breakfast in bed is always a good idea.
BUILD A FORT
Let out your inner child and build an indoor fort! Gather some blankets and charts and get to building.
TRY A NEW RECIPE TOGETHER
It’s always fun to discover a new recipe, especially one that you fall in love with. Kyle gathered a few random ingredients from the grocery store and put together this amazing pasta. Peruse Pinterest for some ideas on dishes you can cook together.
No matter how long you’ve been with your S/O, there’s always more to learn. Put together a list of random questions to ask one another and get to know each other even more. This list is a great place to start.
If you and/or your S/O are gamers (or even if you’re not) break out the video games for a little friendly competition. You can even go to a local store to rent a video game you’ve never played before to even out the competition or try out an old favorite.
MAKE S’MORES ON THE FIRE PIT
If you have a fire pit in the backyard, get lit! Grab some graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows and make some delicious s’mores over the fire.
GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER
If you know me, you know I love personality tests. I proudly claim to be an ESFJ with a type 2 wing 3 enneagram and a sanguine compulsive temperament. Certain personality tests can tell you a lot about yourself, and it’s awesome to share that with your S/O and learn more about their personalities as well. Click here for a few tests you can take together.
HAVE A NERF GUN WAR
Revert back to your childhood ways with a friendly little Nerf gun war around the house or in the backyard.
DRAW EACH OTHER/PAINT A PORTRAIT OF EACH OTHER
This could go one of two ways, but as long as you create are from the heart, that’s all that matters. Grab your favorite mediums, and go to town creating a portrait of each other.
HAVE A WINE AND PAINT NIGHT
Of course, if you don’t want to paint a portrait of your S/O (that may get you into some trouble if it doesn’t turn out too well), you can always just have your own little paint night, with wine of course because wine makes everyone paint a little better.
DINE IN THE DARK
If dining in the dark isn’t something you can do at a local restaurant, why not try it at home? Get all your food on the table, turn out the lights and get to know each other in a more intimate setting. I mean, it worked for Tim and Mary in About Time, right?
Throw a few date nights into one with a themed night! You can have a Mexico-themed night where you make fajitas and learn to salsa dance. You could do a Harry Potter-themed night where you cook some magical dishes, sip on some Butterbeer and watch your favorite movie. The possibilities are endless.
CAMP OUT IN THE BACKYARD
Pitch a tent, get all of your camping gear together and camp out in the backyard. It may not be as comfortable as your bed, but there’s something just a little extra intimate about sleeping outside.
TAKE YOUTUBE DANCE LESSONS
There are so many videos on YouTube to choose from. Pick a type of dance and go for it!
DO A PUZZLE
This is a nice way to spend an evening with your S/O because you’re working toward something together. You could even put some music on in the background to set the mood.
With so many apps that allow you to get food delivered from just about anywhere, even if you don’t feel like cooking, you can still enjoy a delicious meal at home.
TAKE A BUBBLE BATH
Bubble baths are such a good way to wind down after a hectic week. They’re even more enjoyable with your S/O.
PLAN YOUR NEXT DATE NIGHT
If you and your S/O have trouble picking creative date night ideas, why not start planning some nights out now? You can even write them on popsicle sticks or small pieces of paper, put them in a jar and pick one blindly for your next night out.
What are some of your favorite ways to do date night at home?
