I can’t believe the day we’ve all been waiting for is finally HERE – the release of Taylor Swift’s sixth studio album!! #amiright?! Apart from my dentist, Taylor Swift is one of my longest running relationships, and she doesn’t even know it. She got me through all of my break-ups and flirtationships and saw me through the good parts of my relationships, including my current one. She’s beautiful. She’s philanthropic. She loves her fans. She’s a Sagittarius (like me, ayyye). She writes about the things that people are scared to talk about. She’s QUEEN, and I just love her.
Taylor Swift is probably the only artist I listen to where I know every single lyric to every single song (still working on reputation, obvs). I’ve seen her in concert three times, once when she was opening for Rascal Flatts and then on her Fearless and 1989 tours. I just love her so much, and I could honestly gush about her forever, but I won’t because y’all know how awesome she is already.
Taylor has graced the world with over 100 incredible songs, and I’ve been impatiently waiting for reputation to finally hit the shelves. Just ask my boyfriend who graciously stayed up until 11 pm before the night of each of her releases. He listened to every pre-release with me and has heard me rant and rave about my love for Tay, but he still doesn’t fully understand. It’s okay though.
Out of Taylor’s 100+ songs, these are the ones I keep on repeat. I couldn’t put them in any sort of ranking order because narrowing down this list was hard enough.
Side note: This doesn’t include any songs from reputation because obviously this blog post was written before I listened to the album.
TIM MCGRAW – TAYLOR SWIFT
This is Taylor’s first single and the song that made me fall in love with her music. I remember when I was a freshman in high school, and I had just moved to Louisiana, one of my friends from South Carolina sent me this music video, and I became obsessed. What’s ironic is that I wasn’t a fan of country music, but Taylor Swift changed that for me.
Favorite lyrics: “It’s hard not to find it all a little bittersweet, and lookin’ back on all of that, it’s nice to believe.”
TEARDROPS ON MY GUITAR – TAYLOR SWIFT
Minus the guitar part, I can 100% relate to this song, and I can think of more than one instance that it applies to. This song made me love Taylor even more because I was finally hearing music sung by someone my age that just got it and put into words the heartbreak that comes along with falling for someone who’s in love with someone else.
Favorite lyrics: “I’ll bet she’s beautiful, that girl he talks about. And she’s got everything that I have to live without.”
COLD AS YOU – TAYLOR SWIFT
This song gets me every time. I can apply it to so many romantic situations in my life. I’ve always felt that when I’m in relationships, I’m the one that loves more, which I’m okay with, but when I’m in a relationship where the person is absolutely apathetic about everything concerning us and they don’t open up in any way, it’s obviously heartbreak. This song describes that heartbreak so perfectly.
Favorite lyrics: “And when you take, you take the very best of me. So I start a fight cause I need to feel somethin’, and you do what you want cause I’m not what you wanted.”
STAY BEAUTIFUL – TAYLOR SWIFT
This is such a cute little love song, and one of my friends and I used to sing this to each other in college because it’s just so sweet.
Favorite lyrics: “It’s hard to make a conversation when he’s taking my breath away.”
OUR SONG – TAYLOR SWIFT
Another adorable love song. I love music so much because it can make you travel back in time in a way. “Our Song” is a little reminder of that because she’s asking her boyfriend what’s their song, and he gives the cutest (most unrealistic) answer. Just overall preciousness all around.
Favorite lyrics: “Our song is the way you laugh.”
JUMP THEN FALL – FEARLESS
This is super extra cheesy, but I love it for just that reason. She’s basically just talking about how she’s falling for him just by him being around, and that if he falls for her, she’ll be there to catch him. Ah! Lovelovelove.
Favorite lyrics: “I’ve never been so wrapped up. Honey, I like the way you’re everything I ever wanted.”
FOREVER AND ALWAYS – FEARLESS
Ties to Joe Jonas aside, this song really got me when I first listened to it. I can certainly relate to someone blindsiding me with the end of a relationship, as can so many others. Every single part of this song speaks to me.
Favorite lyrics: “Was I out of line? Did I say something way too honest? Made you run and hide like a scared little boy? I looked into your eyes. Thought I knew you for a minute, now I’m not so sure.”
LOVE STORY – FEARLESS
Romeo and Juliet is such a classically tragic love story, but I love how Taylor puts a twist on it and makes it into a happy ending.
Favorite lyrics: “Romeo save me. They’re trying to tell me how to feel. This love is difficult, but it’s real.”
YOU BELONG WITH ME – FEARLESS
This is still one of my favorite music videos by Taylor and obviously one of my favorite songs. I was such an awkward person in middle and high school (and as an adult), and even though I can’t say I ever fought as hard as she does for a guy with a girlfriend, I can 100% relate to losing the guy to the prettier girls.
Favorite lyrics: “I’m the one who makes you laugh when you know you’re about to cry. I know your favorite songs, and you tell me about your dreams. I think I know where you belong. I think I know it’s with me.”
YOU’RE NOT SORRY – FEARLESS
I am ashamed to say that I’ve let guys have one too many chances and have let them manipulate me into getting what they want. I’m notorious for giving people the benefit of the doubt and only seeing the good in people until the bad hits me in the face in the ugliest ways. This song perfectly portrays that frustration of someone trying to say the right things with a hidden agenda when it’s way too late.
Favorite lyrics: “And you got your share of secrets, and I’m tired of being last to know. And now you’re asking me to listen cause it’s worked each time before.”
HAUNTED – SPEAK NOW
This is one of my favorite songs off of the Speak Now soundtrack because I relate it to a situation and a person that hurt me in such an ugly way, and this song helped give me a reality check. Her voice is, for lack of a better word, haunting, and the way she sings every lyric in such a desperate tone makes it that much more beautiful to me.
Favorite lyrics: “He will try to take away my pain, and he just might make me smile, but the whole time I’m wishing it was you instead.”
MINE – SPEAK NOW
I love falling in love and hearing stories of people falling in love, and this song is so perfect for that. She sings about the development of a relationship, and the way that she portrays it in the music video is so beautiful. I love how she sings about getting into a fight and the expectation of him leaving her because of it, but then he surprises her by saying “I’ll never leave you alone.” That’s something I struggle with in relationships – expecting people to leave when things get hard.
Favorite lyrics: “You learn my secrets, and you figure out why I’m guarded. You say we’ll never make my parents mistakes.”
SPARKS FLY – SPEAK NOW
I remember getting a live recorded version of this song before it became part of this album. My friends and I were excited about it and then a tiny bit disappointed when she changed up some of the lyrics. I don’t even remember what the old lyrics were (besides falling in love in an empty bar or something of the sort), but I loved this version as well.
Favorite lyrics: “I’m on my guard for the rest of the world, but with you, I know it’s no good.”
ENCHANTED – SPEAK NOW
This is another one of my favorites from this album, and I was so, so hoping she would make a full music video to it rather than little snippets for her perfume ad. I’ve never been a ‘fall in love at first sight’ kind of girl, but I love how beautifully Taylor sings about it.
Favorite lyrics: “This is me praying that this was the very first page, not where the storyline ends.”
BETTER THAN REVENGE – SPEAK NOW
I knew I was going to love this song after I learned what the premise of it was. I proudly refer to myself as a petty Betty sometimes, and I love how Taylor Swift can be that way as well. This song proves it. That’s what you get when you steal someone’s guy. The claws come out.
Favorite lyrics: “But sophistication isn’t what you wear or who you know, or pushing people down to get you where you wanna go.”
LONG LIVE – SPEAK NOW
This song just reminds me of my Tech Fam in college. Seriously, I had the best friend group, and we made some incredible memories, and this song just reminds me of those awesome times we had together.
Favorite lyrics: “Will you take a moment, promise me this. That you’ll stand by me forever, but if, God forbid, fate should step in, and force us into a good-bye. If you have children someday, when they point to the pictures, please tell them my name.”
OURS – SPEAK NOW
Even after a monotonous workday and spending time with not so great people, it’s nice to remember that you have someone who is going to brighten your day. That’s what I love about this song. Even if no one understands the love you have for one another, it doesn’t matter, because at the end of the day, it’s the two of you.
Favorite lyrics: “And it’s not theirs to speculate if it’s wrong, and your hands are tough, but they are where mine belong.”
ALL TOO WELL – RED
After a breakup, it’s not uncommon to look at the relationship through rose-colored glasses and only remember the good parts. I like that this song talks about some of those good memories she had, but also serves as a reminder of the reason that the relationship turned ugly.
Favorite lyrics: “Maybe we got lost in translation. Maybe I asked for too much. And maybe this thing was a masterpiece till you tore it all up.”
TREACHEROUS – RED
I wish so much that this became a single because I would have loved to see a music video for it. I like this song because it’s about going into a relationship knowing that it might not end well, but doing it anyway because there’s still that slight change for good to come of it.
Favorite lyrics: “And I’ll do anything you say if you say it with your hands. And I’d be smart to walk away, but you’re quicksand.”
I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE – RED
I loved this song immediately because the sound was just so different from anything she had released prior. There’s a person this song reminds me of so clearly because I went into this non-relationship knowing that everything about it was wrong, but I did it anyway, and in the end, I only had myself to blame.
Favorite lyrics: “No apologies. He’ll never see you cry. Pretends he doesn’t know that he’s the reason why you’re drowning.”
WE ARE NEVER EVER GETTING BACK TOGETHER – RED
I love this music video as much as I love this song. Luckily, I’ve never been in a relationship that’s been constantly on-again, off-again. I just love how sassy this song is.
Favorite lyrics: ” I’m really gonna miss you picking fights, and me falling for it screaming that I’m right.”
I ALMOST DO – RED
What a relatable song! This one talks about the time after a breakup when you’re thinking about them and what they’re doing at that very moment. You have the urge to get in touch with them, but you have to keep telling yourself that the breakup was for the best. This has definitely happened to me more than once.
Favorite lyrics: “We made quite a mess, babe. It’s probably better off this way, and I confess babe, in my dreams you’re touching my face, and asking me if I want to try again with you. And I almost do.”
BEGIN AGAIN – RED
I can honestly say that I’ve listened to this song every time I feel like I’ve officially moved on from a romantic relationship. It’s such an empowering song about getting over someone and how it’s a process and not something that just happens overnight.
Favorite lyrics: “I’ve been spending the last eight months thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end, but on a Wednesday in a café, I watched it begin again.”
BLANK SPACE – 1989
I think one of the reasons I relate to Taylor Swift so much is because we’re both Sagittariuses. I hate when people give her a hard time about dating around, because I’ve definitely had my fair share of boyfriends/almost boyfriends. I love that she took the world’s persona of her and turned it into this brilliant song.
Favorite lyrics: “I get drunk on jealousy. But you’ll come back each time you leave. Cause darling I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream.”
NEW ROMANTICS – 1989
I love this song because it’s so upbeat and give a big FU to anyone that’s brought you down.
Favorite lyrics: “We are too busy dancing to get knocked off our feet. Baby, we’re the new romantics. The best people in life are free.”
YOU ARE IN LOVE – 1989
I love being in love and listening to a song like this. It’s just about being so in love with someone and feeling that love in everything that you do.
Favorite lyrics: “Pauses then says, you’re my best friend. And you knew what it was. He is in love.”
It was so difficult narrowing down this list because I love all of her songs (bar 2-3. Not gonna lie.), but these are definitely my absolute favorites, bar the ones from reputation. I’ve already fallen in love with so many songs on her new album, and I’ll be playing it on repeat until I memorize every lyric.
