Today’s the day I’m leaving for my 10-day road trip around the south, y’all! With my Gryffindor robe, American flag sunglasses and cowgirl boots in tow, I’m way too excited to embark on my solo road trip. I’ll be visiting lots of beautiful people along the way.
My first stop? Tennessee! I’ll be reuniting with my blog/IRL bestie, Nina. We’ve been on many adventures together already (Read about them here and here!), and this will be meeting #3. She’s been planning out the weekend, and I have no doubt it’s going to be a blast. I already know kayaking, paddleboarding, wine and books will be involved.
Next I’ll be going to visit my family in South Carolina. Everyone lives around the Charleston area, so I’m excited to see them, including my nephew, Cooper. That’s right, y’all. I’m officially an aunt, and I can’t wait to meet the little guy. Plus my dad and his entire side of the family lives there too, so I’ll be visiting my grandma, aunts and uncles and my many, many cousins.
After leaving South Carolina, I’ll be making a day trip to Jacksonville, Florida to see some of my friends that are still on the beauuuutiful Carnival Elation, including my bestie, Dann, and my favorite Kyrgyzstanian, Azamat. I don’t know what we’ll be doing, but I know it will involve lots of food and lots of laughs.
I’m not staying overnight in Jacksonville, so once I drop them back off in port, I’ll be driving straight to New Orleans. I rented the cutest AirBnB. It’ll be my first AirBnB experience, so fingers crossed that all will go well. I’ll be having lunch with my friend, Haley, in Baton Rouge, and I’ll be spending the last day of my trip visiting with my friend, Nono, who I met while working on the Elation as well. So many reunions, y’all. My little heart can hardly handle all the excitement.
All that said, you know I can’t embark on a trip that includes over a day of driving (my first leg to Tennessee is over 12 hours!) without a good playlist (and snacks, but that’s not what this post is about). I like to think I have an eclectic taste in music, and my Spotify is a direct reflection of that. I have one playlist that goes from country to 90’s rock to rap to top 40 to Latin. I can jam out to almost anything. So what songs will I be jammin’ to on this journey?
SYMPHONY – CLEAN BANDIT feat. ZARA LARSSON
This is easily my favorite song of the summer. I know it came out a few months ago, but I was kind of lost with society while living on the ship, so I literally heard it for the first time last week. I’ve been listening to it non-stop (the video is heartbreaking!). I just love everything about it. I get chills every time she sings “Will you hold me tight and not let go?”
NO SCRUBS – TLC
I love listening to old school jams while I’m on the road, and this is definitely a favorite of mine. Beyond jamming to it in the car, I also love singing it on karaoke. I mean, it’s both catchy and truthful. Ain’t nobody want no scrubs.
I’M LIKE A BIRD – NELLY FURTADO
I’ve been loving this song something extra lately because it feels somewhat autobiographical. In some ways, I do feel kind of bird-like. With a job working on a cruise ship, it’s not hard to. Or maybe I should feel like more of a fish. Or a mermaid! We’ll go with mermaid.
I’M GONNA BE (500 MILES) – THE PROCLAIMERS
This is one of those songs that you can’t help but sing along to when it comes on the radio. I love the song itself – super catchy and a classic – but I also love the message behind it. He’ll walk 1,000 miles just to get to her. Oh stop it! Aww!
YOU BELONG WITH ME – TAYLOR SWIFT
Don’t even get me started on my love for Taylor Swift. If you’ve been around for awhile, you know that my love for Taylor runs even deeper than my love for Mary-Kate and Ashley, and that’s saying something. I couldn’t have a road trip playlist without including a song by my girl, so naturally I chose the one with my favorite music video (because I mean, how cute is Lucas Till? I also just recently rewatched The Hannah Montana Movie, so that smile was on my mind).
BAILANDO – ENRIQUE IGLESIAS
When I tell you this song came on during every single crew party on the ship, I’m not exaggerating. I have a love/hate relationship with it. Mostly love. I guarantee I’ll be jammin’ hard when it comes on on the road.
SOME NIGHTS – FUN.
I first fell in love with fun. when I saw them open for Switchfoot back when I was in the ninth grade. They were called The Format back then, and I actually got to meet and talk to the band. I had no idea that over a decade later, I’d still be a fan.
MY HUMPS – BLACK EYED PEAS
This is a song that everyone knows the words to, but no one remembers actually trying to learn the lyrics. This was my jam back in high school, and listening to it always brings me back to those less complicated days.
MALIBU – MILEY CYRUS
She lost her way for a little bit, but she’s back, and I’m so excited about her new sound. I love this song and this music video. When I was baby-sitting my friends’ baby, Charlie, we sat and watched this music video, and he flipped out when he saw her carrying all of those balloons. It was the cutest thing.
SUGAR, WE’RE GOING DOWN – FALL OUT BOY
Every road trip playlist needs to have this song on it because you know you can’t help but belt out all the lyrics when you hear it.
This is just a handful of the songs I’ll be listening to on my trip. For a complete list, check out my playlist on Spotify.
