Y’all. My little sister turns 21 today. I honestly can’t handle it. In my mind, she’s still 8-years-old with her pre-braces teeth and nerdy glasses.
My sister and I have a different relationship than other sister dynamics I know. We didn’t live in the same house until I was 15, and she was 7. Before that, I would spend summers with her, my mom and step-dad, and we would find random (and embarrassing) ways to entertain ourselves. We have a never-ending list of inside jokes, we tease each other about stupid things and in her 21 years of living, we’ve never had a fight. I know, right? Crazy. It’s true though. I love my little sister more than anyone else in the world and would do anything to protect her, but my heart can’t handle that she’s turning 21 today (mostly because 1. there’s no way she can possibly be an actual grown-up now, and 2. that means I’m getting old).
If you didn’t grow up with a sister then I’m sorry, but you missed out. When I have kids, I hope to have two girls with an older brother (ahem *bodyguard*), probably because that’s what my mom did. But honestly, y’all, there are so many incredible things about having a sister.
YOU ALWAYS HAVE SOMEONE TO SPILL YOUR SECRETS TO
Whether you’re gushing over a new crush, crying over a heartbreak or just need to word vomit, your sister will always be your go-to person to share all of your thoughts and secrets with. Having a sister is like having a built-in therapist. Whether or not she can give you solid advice is irrelevant. The fact that you have someone who you can tell everything to knowing that they’ll keep your secrets and still love you no matter what dumb things you did, is the best feeling in the world.
SHE’LL ALWAYS BE HONEST WITH YOU
You know when you want to do something and you think it’s stupid but you’re not sure? Your sister will be the one you can turn to when you need a solid, slightly biased opinion. They’re the person who will be straight-forward with you because even if they hurt your feelings, you’re still going to love each other in the end.
YOU ALREADY KNOW WHO YOUR MAID OF HONOR WILL BE
Never will you have to have that awkward conversation with your friends about who is going to be your Maid of Honor. Of course, if you have more than one sister like I do, they’ll have to battle it out for the MOH title.
YOU HAVE LOTS OF INSIDE JOKES THAT NO ONE ELSE UNDERSTANDS
When I tell you my sister and I laugh at the dumbest things together, I’m not even kidding. We have so many memories in our archives; it’s absolutely ridiculous. We’ve done a lot of silly things, both together and apart. Any time she says “Remember that time…” I prepare myself for a fit of uncontrollable giggles.
SHE’LL ALWAYS BE THERE FOR YOU
No matter where you are in life, no matter if you’re fighting, no matter the distance, sisters will be there for each other. If you need a shoulder to cry on, toilet paper for the boy’s house who screwed you over (Kidding. Am I?) or a listening ear, she’ll be there no matter what.
YOU BASICALLY HAVE TWO WARDROBES
If you and your sister are close in size, you can borrow each other’s clothes. I’m lucky that my sister and I wear relatively the same size even though we have different body shapes. Her feet are ginormous though. Just kidding, but they are a little bigger than mine.
YOU ALWAYS HAVE SOMEONE TO HANG OUT WITH AT PARTIES
Anytime my sister and I go to a party thrown by our parents’ friends, it never fails that we’re the only ones around our age. Everyone else is our parents’ age (duh) or little kids. Luckily, we have each other to talk to, and if we’re lucky, they also have dogs for us to play with.
YOU HAVE A ROLE MODEL
Whether you’re the younger or the older sister is irrelevant. Having a sister means having someone you can look up to. You look for the best qualities in her and hope you can instill those qualities in yourself. Even though my sister is younger than me, in some ways I feel like she has her ish together more than I do.
NO CONVERSATION IS EVER TOO AWKWARD
Periods. Sex. Weird rashes. Mistakes with guys. Family issues. Whatever it is, you’ll always have someone you can talk to about the awkward things you’re not sure you want to talk to your friends about. You can also Google the things you don’t know and not feel weird about it.
YOU HAVE A BUILT-IN BEST FRIEND
I’ve always said that having a sister is like having a built-in best friend, and it’s so true. Not only does your sister know everything about your social life, your dating life and your home life, they also know all of the crazy things going on in your head, and instead of judging you for it, they love you for it.
