I enjoy listening to music that matches my mood, so if look at all of my song choices below, you can probably tell that I’ve been going through a lot of ups and downs emotionally lately. I’m happy to say it’s been more positive than negative though, and a lot of that has to do with my incredible support system.
A few of the songs on this list are really fun and poppy, including the ones by Oh Honey and Olly Murs, both artists that I think should be more well-known than they are. There’s also an emotional songs by Maroon 5 because, ya know, life. On the other side of that, I included a few “slap in the face” songs by Charlie Puth and Brandyn Burnette because there are few things I like more than a song that expresses the exact words I wish I was brave enough to say to someone. I think this list is a pretty good representation of my diverse taste. All of these songs have been on repeat lately, and I’ve been blasting them nonstop on my commutes.
SUGAR, YOU – OH HONEY
This is such a sweet song about two people who have crushes on each other, and they just want to get to know each other better. It was on my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify. I had only heard one other song by Oh Honey, which was “Be Okay,” and after discovering this song, I quickly listened to a number of their EPs and quickly fell in love.
WRAPPED UP – OLLY MURS feat. TRAVIE MCCOY
This is a recent favorite, but I’ve been listening to it a lot on my runs. It tells the story of this guy who has fallen for this girl, and basically she has him wrapped around his finger. It’s a really fun and catchy song, and it just makes me want to dance.
UNKISS ME – MAROON 5
“Unkiss Me” is absolutely heartbreaking, but it’s also so, so relatable. I’m already a fan of Maroon 5, but this song hit me hard. It’s about this guy who likes this girl, but the girl doesn’t want to take the relationship to the next level, so he’s basically wishing that their past would disappear so he didn’t have to feel the pain. Gosh, it just speaks to me!
WE DON’T TALK ANYMORE – CHARLIE PUTH feat. SELENA GOMEZ
Even though this song is super catchy, it’s also pretty badass, and I love it. It’s from both the male and female perspectives, and like the title says, they don’t really talk to each other anymore and their relationship isn’t what it used to be. They’re both insinuating that they heard the other person found someone that’s allegedly better. The song has them both questioning if their relationship was just a waste of time in the first place.
OCTAHATE – RYN WEAVER
From the sound of this song, you wouldn’t think that there’s so much animosity behind the lyrics because the beat is just so catchy, but trust me, there’s some serious hatin’ goin’ on here. Ryn is singing about how she fell for someone but they broke her heart, and now she’s left trying to piece herself together.
SEND MY LOVE (TO YOUR NEW LOVER) – ADELE
Adele just knows how to speak to my soul. She’s singing to a past lover who said he was ready to get her his all, but then he changed his mind and left her alone, only to find someone else. I love the sarcasm behind the chorus and how she’s low-key giving him and his new lover a metaphorical middle finger.
INTO YOU – ARIANA GRANDE
I used to not be a big of Ariana Grande, but I’ve been loving her music as of late. This song is just catchy and fun and a bit sexy. It talks about how she’s into a guy, but she doesn’t want everyone to know about it, and basically, she just wants him.
TIC TALK – RENEE BLAIR
I had to include at least once country song, and I’ve been loving this pop-country song by Renee Blair. She must be super new to the scene, because I couldn’t even find her on YouTube. This song was also a Spotify Discover Weekly playlist song. It’s so adorable, and she’s singing about how she’s spotted a guy, and she wants him to come talk to her. Simple, but so cute.
CHEAP THRILLS – SIA
Sometimes I forget how much I love Sia. Every time she comes out with a song, I don’t fall in love with it until it’s been on the radio for awhile, this one included. Plus, I love any song that talks about not spending money because #strugglelife
THANKS FOR NOTHING – BRANDYN BURNETTE
This is one of the best revenge/slap in the face/you suck/I’m better without you songs that I’ve heard recently. At first, the song starts out slow, and you think he’s really broken up about his breakup with this girl, but then the chorus hits, and you’re like …oh. Sarcastically, he says he has nothing without this girl, but then it lists a bunch of good things that actually came out of the situation. Yea, it’s pretty awesome.
