One of my favorite things to do is introduce people to new music. The reason I love music so much is because it helps put into words the things that I’m feeling. Even though I don’t write poems or lyrics, as I writer, I still appreciate the beauty behind the words that these artists are able to create. It makes me so happy to find a song that resonates with me in such a way that I want to play it on repeat, force it onto my friends and memorize all of the lyrics. I’m a lover words in many forms – blogs, books, lyrics, quotes – and the words of these artists make me want to listen to their songs over and over again.
I met Ty Mayfield on a work trip to Las Colinas, Texas, and I fell in love with so many of his songs.
Not only is he extremely talented, he’s also a genuinely nice person, and I love speaking with him after his show. I’ve mentioned before that I enjoy meeting opening artists, purchasing their CD’s and getting to chat with them after their set. Ty was no exception. I listened to his CD in my car for weeks after seeing him open for Matt Hires, and I’m still a huge fan.
I only just recently heard of Hailey Whitters, and I became a fan super quick. She’s just an adorable human, and I’m in love with almost all of her lyrics. I met her after she opened for Corey Smith, and she was such a sweetheart. Her lyrics are a mix of super fun and heartbreaking, basically like life itself.
I’ve been a fan of Jessie James for several years. I have many favorites, including “I Look So Good (Without You), “Wanted” and “Boys in the Summer.” I’m not one of those girls that plans out my wedding or anything like that, but I do want to dance to her song “Military Man” when I dance with my dad.
Genre: Blend of blues, electronic, bass
I only started listening to Marian Hill last year, but since the first time I heard “One Time,” I’ve been a super fan. I’ve mentioned them on this blog before, tweeted their lyrics and shared their music on my Facebook page, because they’re absolutely amazing. I became even more of a fan after seeing them perform live at Austin City Limits last summer, and they were one of my favorite acts.
Marian Hill is a duo made up of Jeremy Lloyd (the mastermind behind the beats) and Samantha Gongol (the gorgeous voice). One thing that I especially love about them is that they always interact with me on Twitter. If I mentioned them, they’re likely to favorite, retweet or reply to the tweet. It’s extra easy to love artists that interact with their fans on social media.
Genre: Alternative pop
I first listened to Oh Wonder after their song “Lose It” was recommended to me on my Spotify playlist. They have such a cool and mellow sound, perfect for a quick commute or relaxing bubble bath.
Genre: Hip hop, electronic
Hippie Sabotage was probably one of my favorite concerts that I’ve ever attended. They put on such a fun show, and everyone in the audience is pumped and having a good time. I was front row when I saw them in Austin, and it was such an amazing time.
Genre: Pop rock
I’ve been a fan of Matt Hired for several years, and when I saw that he was playing while I would be a on work trip to that area, I jumped at the chance to see him live. I’m one of those weird people who is okay with going to see shows by myself (ahem, Academy of Country Music Awards), and I’m so glad that I went. Matt played with just his voice and his guitar, and I loved it. Acoustic, intimate shows are some of my favorite concerts, and Matt’s was no exception. I even got to meet him after the show and chat with him a bit, which brought me way too much happiness.
Genre: Hip hop
Dawin was recommended to me on my Discovery playlist on Spotify, and I’ve been a fan since the first beat. His songs are so upbeat and fun and just make me want to dance. What furthered my love for him was Rosanna Pansino. I love her YouTube channel, and she was in his music video for “Dessert” and then later, Dawin appeared on one of her episodes of Nerdy Nummies. I love jammin’ out to his songs in the car.
