I’ve always been one of those people who likes a nice balance between keeping to a schedule and practicing spontaneity. I like to lean more toward the spontaneous side and leave holes in my schedule to be filled with random activities, but sometimes I find myself getting stuck in the mundane activities of my everyday life – get up, go to work, drive home, feed the dogs, eat dinner, watch Netflix, etc. It’s like I’m unintentionally running on autopilot.
When I get caught in the cycle of my days looking exactly the same, I like to change things up a bit to make life a bit more exciting. If you’re anything like me then you’ll love these tips on how to break the monotony in your schedule and have an awesome day.
1 // GET OUT OF THE HOUSE
If your daily routine includes you sitting at home after work in your PJs at 6:30 pm watching Netflix, then I think it’s time for you to get up and do something outside of your routine. It doesn’t matter what it is. Visit the local library and read a few chapters of a new book. Check out happy hour at a local restaurant. Visit one of your city’s notable landmarks or museums. Take a walk at the park. Just get out of the house and take in some new scenery.
2 // CALL SOMEONE YOU HAVEN’T SPOKEN TO IN AWHILE
It’s always fun to catch up with old friends or exchange stories with family members you haven’t spoken with in awhile. Make a Skype date or have a conference call like the middle school days. Reminiscing about the good ole days and catching each other up on the happenings of your life is sure to make an okay day an awesome one.
3 // CHANGE UP YOUR SNACK ROUTINE
I’ve been trying to get into the habit of eating smaller meals more often because I take medicine that kills my appetite. I easily tire of food after eating something over and over again, so when I’m looking for a new snack, I want something tasty and awesome, but also something that comforts me. I don’t know about you, but I get warm fuzzies every time I do something nice for someone with no expectation of getting anything in return. I’m one of those people who likes to ‘pay it forward’ at Starbucks and buy gifts for my friends because I saw something that reminded me of them in the store. Doing something nice for someone doesn’t necessarily mean spending money. You could also offer someone a hug or a shoulder to cry on or you could even lend an ear if they need someone to talk to. Compliment someone on their outfit or thank a co-worker for a job well done. Doing something nice for someone, no matter how big or small, always leaves you feeling awesome.
