When I was a college freshman, I went on a dating frenzy. I had just gotten out of one of my most serious relationships at the time, and I was ready to embrace the college lifestyle. Everyone said that college was the perfect time for you to figure out your life, relationships included, and I took almost every opportunity I could to do so.
One of the most notable dates I went on (that didn’t end in a follow-up date) went a little something like this…
First off, I wish I could tell you how I met this guy (we’ll call him Jeff). I really don’t know. Maybe we had a mutual friend? I honestly have no idea, so I can’t share that bit with y’all. What I can tell you is that he was a bit older than me and was actually out of college already. He lived in Shreveport, but I was going to school in Ruston at the time, so we decided to meet up when I was in town visiting my family one weekend.
So Jeff picked me up, and we went straight to the movie theater. I was never a fan of the typical dinner and a movie date (I mean, you don’t even get to talk to the person…), particularly for a first date, so that should have been a sign right there, but I ignored it. He picked the movie, but I was okay with his choice, which was Eagle Eye. I’m a big fan of Shia (minus the whole going crazy and being a generally not good person thing, but on screen and also back in the Even Stevens/Holes days, Shia was my man), so I didn’t complain.

During the movie, he put his arm around me, which would have been sweet, except his arm was draped a little lower than my neck, which meant that I was awkwardly laying on his arm, uncomfortably away my seat. Then he tried to put his hand on my knee, and I wasn’t having it (#prude). Eventually, he got smart and held my hand instead. I was 18 at the time, so butterflies flew in spite of the date plans.
That was pretty much the only good thing that happened during the date though. Afterward, he said he was going to take me to dinner, and I could pick the place. Indecisive me didn’t know what to pick because 1) I’m indecisive, as mentioned and 2) I wasn’t really that familiar with Shreveport (since I had actually lived outside of Shreveport in Bossier), so I didn’t know any good restaurants around. I kid you not, he pulled into Sonic. Ummm…I liked Sonic as an after school hang out spot, but on a first date? No, sir.
Irrelevant side note —
When we were driving back to his place, “Mrs. Officer” by Lil Wayne came on. This was the first time I ever heard the song, and I was so confused by it, but later, I started to love it. I jam hard to it when it comes up on my old iPod.
Okay, so we’re driving back to his place to eat our to-go Sonic, and Jeff doesn’t turn any lights on when we get there. Should I have been creeped out? Not sure. He turns on the TV and settles on I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Out of everything on TV, that’s what he picks. Did I have a say? Of course not. This guy was pretty serious about his entertainment, and my opinion clearly didn’t matter.
After finishing our Sonic and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer in silence, I get him to drive me home, hoping this will be the end of it, but no. He texts me several times during the following months, asking for another date. Some I ignored; others I answered. What made me mad about this was he never texted anything of relevance as the first text. His first text, always (I mean every single time), was “Hi.” Ugh! It drove me nuts. Then when I denied him a second date, he started saying all of these bad things about me, including something along the lines of “I have sex with girls who are prettier than you every week.” Was that supposed to make me jealous? I’m not sure, but I told him to go have sex with one of them and stop bothering me.
Relevant side note —
I did not sleep with this guy. Also, years after our first date, he followed me on Instagram. Kbye.
